Katowice, the coal capital of Poland, joins Powering Past Coal Alliance with support of Climate Reality Leaders

Updated: Jan 30

Katowice’s decision to join the Powering Past Coal Alliance (PPCA) is a monumental step for the Silesia region, marking a shift from its coal-dependent past to a sustainable future. This achievement stems not only from local government initiatives but also from years of dedicated work by Climate Reality Leaders, with Patryk Białas' (Volunteer Coordinator for Poland) leadership, who have tirelessly advocated for a just energy transition. Their efforts have included consulting on territorial plans, conducting research, and fostering dialogue to ensure the transition benefits both the environment and local communities.

One of the key contributions was the consultation on the Territorial Just Transition Plan for Upper Silesia, where Climate Reality Leaders worked alongside other organizations to provide constructive critiques and actionable recommendations. This input highlighted the importance of balancing environmental goals with economic and social considerations, ensuring that no community is left behind. Their commitment to amplifying diverse voices was further demonstrated through the production of a short documentary that brought together perspectives from miners, activists, youth, and faith leaders, showcasing shared hopes for a green and prosperous Silesia.

In addition to these initiatives, Climate Reality Leaders conducted in-depth research, such as the “Katowice 2050: From Black to Green” survey, which informed regional strategies by capturing public priorities like renewable energy adoption and green urban development. Climate Reality Europe has suponsored and supported the publication of Korzenie Przyszłości ("Roots of the Future") led by Patryk, a book documenting personal stories from various stakeholders, including politicians, activists, and community members, illustrating the multifaceted journey toward a just transition.

Through these efforts, Climate Reality Leaders have not only influenced policy but also nurtured a collective vision for a sustainable future in the region. Their work has been instrumental in building the foundation for transformative decisions, such as Katowice joining the PPCA, proving that meaningful change requires both grassroots advocacy and strategic partnerships.
